In 1950, North Austin families yearned for a local church and parish school. With the backing of Austin's inaugural Bishop, Most Rev. Louis J. Reicher, St. Louis Catholic School welcomed its first students on September 4, 1956. Among them were 245 students from grades 1 to 7, who received their education from four devoted Sisters of the Holy Cross and one lay teacher. By May 1958, the school proudly celebrated the graduation of its very first 8th-grade class, and the St. Louis Crusaders football team achieved a remarkable 6-0 victory in their first Catholic Interscholastic League championship.
In 1962, tuition remained quite affordable at just $8.00 per family, coupled with a $10 book fee per child. School uniforms retained their simplicity, featuring khaki pants, a tradition that continues today. Pants were priced at $2.98, while short-sleeve shirts were a bargain at $1.98. The Parents Club, now known as the Home and School Association, played a pivotal role in supporting the school during those years and remains a strong and active presence today.
The campus experienced continuous growth and development over the years. New buildings were added in 1967, and a school board was established in 1969 to further enhance the educational experience. In 1980, a regulation track was introduced, later honored as the Ox Emerson Track in 1987.Fast forward to 2016, the campus underwent a series of improvements, including the creation of a tranquil prayer garden and the installation of air conditioning in the gymnasium. A significant milestone occurred in 2017-2018 when the school introduced a Catholic Montessori program. Then, in 2020, the original church was transformed into the St. Jerome Library and Media Center, embracing the changing educational landscape.
In April of 2022, Mrs. Rachel Eckert became principal, a role she continues today. After 68 years, St. Louis School stands unwavering in its commitment to exceptional Catholic education, shaping future leaders under the guiding light of Christ.
The mission of St. Louis Catholic School is to prepare the leaders of tomorrow with the light of Christ as their guide.
